An old standby. This wine is a solid claret with a nose of cassis and overall good balance. Nothing extreme about this wine, but it has a good amount of everything I look for in Bdx. I decided to order a few more bottles.

97 Poujeaux [Moulis] This is a bit better than it was a year ago. It has softened and the flavor continues to be long on the tongue. There is still a little bit of grippy grittiness to this that I thought was much more marked last year. I don't quite understand what all the excitement about this is about and I like the wines of Moulis. 87 pts

Initial nose of that perfumey flower that I am just beginning to associate with good Bordeaux. This developed into a nice nose that I am finally realising is ripe cassis. Beautiful!. Nice smokiness. Good acidity. Fresh. Cherry type fruits. Over the hours tobacco/something and slight leather developed. Well, I call it leather anyway. Wonderful fruit. Smooth Very Good Indeed.

After reading much glowing praise about this from RP and others I finally uncorked a bottle to serve with a steak Dianne. I was disappointed. Perhaps it needed decanting [all we had done was let it sit in glasses for perhaps 20 min prior to beginning consumption] but it tasted hard and uncouth to me. It didn't have an unusually expressive bouquet. I have 3 more bottles stashed away so I'm hoping I'm wrong and a few more years will add to it's appeal.

Upon opening it, a nice fresh smell of flowers and bright fruit...red cherry mostly... Took a sip, and it was pretty tannic at this point....i had a feeling this wasnt quite ready to drink yet, but i decanted it and decided to give it a few hours before drinking... A couple hours back, this wine started to show some good fruit...more specifically a bright red sour cherry taste...almost exclusively this flavor...also some flavor of little red currants that arent completely ripe...if you know what im talking about.. Anyway, this wine is still tannic, and the good flavors are still hiding behind the acidity a bit.....i think time will do this wine good....maybe 2-4 years...the wine also has an interesting grip due to the sour flavors of the fruit....sort of reminds me of cranberry juice a little.... Overall, a good value....86-87 now...could be a 89-90 wine a few years down the road... |

For the value conscious consumer this is a good bet. Typical for the '97's this wine has a deep red color. The nose offers up red fruit, baconfat along with a touch of Bordeaux mustiness. The nose reminded me of the '97 Falesco Umbrian Merlot. Again typical for the '97's this wine has a forward grapey/fruity quality and does not require much thought. You definitely will get a mouthful of cherries intermixed with cassis with a nice firm body and finish. This is an easy drinking wine, goes well with food, in some aspects like an Italian table wine. It actually held up to garlic bread which would have burried most mature Bordeaux - not a bad thing. I bought a case of this wine at release and it seems to be a bit more mature now than it was last year. After 3 hours of air there is just a touch of spiciness. I have not been a big fan of the '97 vintage (I only bought this and the Lafite) but this one might be worth buying if the price is right.
