Quite firm and tight, but a successful Baron, if not up to the level it started to achieve with the outstanding '89/'90 duo. A big wine that has the balance to go on, but probably not improve. The Paulliac origin shows in its structure and density. Very good, but no more. Probably would show better after a longer spell in the decanter.

Nothing wrong with this bottle. Decanted one hour. Couldn't wait any longer. Some signs of maturity but still a young wine. Huge nose, very, very concentrated and complex. Long finish which ended on a quite tannic note which suggests a long life ahead. Saved some overnight which I just poured into two glasses for later this afternoon. Nose more developed.

Very big, sturdy nose with autumn leaves, cassis and sweet coffe. Very good. Gets better and better in the glass. Deep.
Powerful, young taste with lovely sweet fruit. Concentrated and very long. Still have young tannins. Very, very good. |

I had the restaurant open both clarets when we got there, but they didn't decant until just before serving. A deep purple colour. Explosion of black fruits, oak, liquirice etc. Very full bodied. Soft tannins. No acidity. Slightly spicy. Drinking superbly. This is the second or third one I've had recently and they've all been spectacular.

Quite stunning. Very dark coloured, light orange at the rim. Strong nose of black fruits, wood and some metallic overtones. Full bodied and very concentrated. Extremely complex. Too many things to count - each mouthful I detected something different. Very smooth, no hard tannins and almost had a sweet quality about it. Highly recommended.

A rather tatty looking bottle. Removed the foil and the cork was sunken about 1/4 inch. Then the cork disintegrated. What to do? I ended up pouring the wine into a decanter, then through a tea strainer into a milk jug and finally back into the (rinsed) 89 Pichon-Lalande bottle from a few days ago (there was a big bit of cork stuck in the P-B bottle). Not an auspicious start. But then, one whiff was all it took to tell me there's nothing wrong with the actual wine. Cassis and spice in abundace. A nice, matured red colour, no dscolouration at the edges and not very leggy. Asmooth-tannined taste with black fruits and a medium finish. A very fine wine. Beats the pants of the 82 La Lagune. Much fresher and fruitier. Classic Pauillac.

1982 Pichon Baron. A volcanic nose of cedar wood, spice and grandpa’s musty old cigar box. This wine is what mature Bordeaux is all about. Concentrated and powerful but balanced and elegant at the same time. A wine that keeps changing as the bottle airs. Plenty of cassis in the finish which seems to go for a minute. I hope this wine keeps singing like this for years to come. For the numerically inclined this is a 95+ pointer if I’ve ever had one. Cross-posted.
