This wine was not showing much age at all. The nose (cedar box) was incredible and did this wine have fruit. It was very concentrated. One could almost describe it as somewhat of a California style. Yet it had that tell tale roasted quality that many of the 1990s exhibit. If I had not had the 1990 Margaux in New York (Thanks Again Paul North) this spring I probably would have been even more impressed but this was plenty good. I would give it a 95+.

90 Pichon Baron [Pauillac] We've had this Pauillac before and it has shown much better with some airing and decanting. Unfortunately this afternoon we did not have time for those courtesies and were forced to quaff it. It struck me as very New World like with its big ripe over the top extraction. It's very thick and chocolatey in the mouth. I would think owners of this should plan ahead prior to drinking this because we've seen such an improvement in this wine with just a few small steps [double decanting/aeration]. Not a great score but 89 pts for this.

This was inserted as a ringer in a bottle of a smaller 96 St. Emilion (at a tasting of some smaller 96s & 98s). It was rich, tannic, and delicious. Clearly demonstrates the difference between the big boys and all the rest. It would be a joy to taste over its [long] lifespan. 94 pts.

Deep red color. Nose of mature Bordeaux with cedar, cigar box, spice and a mildy annoying mustiness that blew off after 30 minutes of so. This my have been a bad bottle which had a raised cork but no signs of seepage. The wine tasted much older than it's stated age. It had sufficient cassis fruit and length but was a bit dry and fragile. This wine confirms my impressions that many of the '90 Bordeaux are in their windows of drinkability.

The nose was rather muted despite airing for three hours. Very dark color, with lots of minerals, earth and black currants. Very long slightly tannic finish. Its a thick wine, and very concentrated.

The 1990 does have the roasted fruit taste that Parker alludes to in his review but I find it much less forward than the 89 and some of the more interesting notes (cedar ) seem far less prominent. Is this a more elegant wine? Perhaps. Is it more fun to drink than the 89 (as sugested by Parker)? In my humble opinion categorically not. This is a great wine but no equal to the 89.
