I picked this wine up a few years back at a Sam's blow-out sale for about $15. I was rummaging through my cellar the other day and decided to see how it was doing. I had a bottle about a year and a half ago with rightbrain (a BWE'er) and we thought is was nice but a bit tannic and closed. It reminded me of how the '97 Poujeaux is drinking now - tight with lots of bright, red fruit and signifcant tannin. Things have changed for the better with this wine. Upon opening, the nose was closed and offered up mainly cherries with a hint of earth. After 2 hours on the decanter this wine turned 180 degrees. The nose was really hinting at classic Bordeaux - wet leaves and barnyard and perhaps a touch of cedar. On the palate the wine was really nice for it's cru. Plenty of cassis fruit with great balance and a good finish. This wine was really something, especially given the cost. My sense is that this wine is making the transition from primary to secondary. St. Estephe wines are know for being hard and long-lived; however, many of the Cru Bourgeois wines use a large percentage of Merlot which can result in a softer, perhaps earlier-maturing wine. '95 seems to have been a good Merlot year. The Beau-Site is a good example of this style of St. Estephe. I believe the yield was 65 cab 35 merlot in '95. I wish a had more than the 3 I bought originally. |
