The nose on this wine is fabulous. I can't stop sniffing it. One of the best bouquets for a Ducru in the past eight vintages. Is this wine already about to turn seven years old? Goodness, where is the time going. This is a nice well-defined 1998 Medoc. Tannic, medium-to-full bodied, and ripe, with a pleasant, lasting finish. Very different than the elegant 1999. Kind of a coffee and tobacco type of wine.

1998 Ducru Beaucaillou [St Julien] A little sweetness to the nose and some cedar. I'm personally not wowed by this but the rest of the group overwhelmingly preferred this vintage to the well reputed, but very tight, 95 and 96 efforts. 89 pts.

I came into the tasting with high hopes for this wine. Cassis and stones on the gentle nose. Medium-bodied with some dry fruit in the middle. Dry, acidic finish. The acidity in this sample bothers me. Perhaps this is just juvenile elegance.
