‘96 Speri Amarone. $32. Dense purple color. Initial nose is intense truffles - a real turn-on. After a few minutes the truffles mellow and some tar and anise emerge. The palate is seamless from start to finish with that roundness and freshness you get from Amarone. Raisins and prunes dominate the fruit. This wine has plenty of power but it also has grace. Something like 14% alcohol but you don’t taste a bit. Perhaps a tannin or two on the finish but you really have to look for it. A wonderful wine and a great QPR, at least for Amarone. I have always been a fan of Speri for good value in Valpolicella. Roberto
