Dark red in the glass. 100 points on the nose. Magnificent scents of dill, tea, and cigar box. Strong and port-like. Wonderful structure and definition. Ripe, concentrated and dense. This finish could have been a touch longer. But greatness is certainly present here.

While undeniably delicious, this was marginally disappointing because it lacked the tremendous flair and almost confectionery sweetness of the most exuberant examples of this famous '82. Interesting topnote of cinnamon followed by a medium weight plummy and yummy burst of fruit in its secondary phase. To be enjoyed now.

Marvellous rich and sweet characteristic 82` nose. Still kicking tannins and very balanced. Surprisingly light-coloured hue could imply not 100% storing history. Very solid wine, but lacking the "cornocupia of fruit" we expect from such a highly rated bottle. Actually a bit mid-palate hollowness and lacking the "sweet syrupy touch" I find in other 82`s.

Tasted at a 82 Bordeaux tasting. Other wines in flight included Cos d'Estournel, Grand Puy Lacoste, and Ducru Beaucaillou. Full red, no bricking. Big, forward nose with lots of fruit, cedar, some hints of mint and just enough grassy/herby notes to add complexity. Easily the fullest-bodied in the flight, rich ripe fruit coats the palate, beautiful secondary notes kick in on the mid- and back-palate, long, killer finish. Should continue to drink well for many years to come. 95 points, group first.

1982 Pichon Lalande. Deep mature garnet. First whiff is superb: wet earth, river bottom, tobacco, spice. Ample and plush dark fruit (plum and cherry) on the palate with wonderful balance and grip. Great interplay of tannin and fruit in the finish. This was the second WOW of the evening. Second taste of this wine an hour later was completely different and shut down.

I purchased this bottle on release in 1985 and it has been perfectly stored since. This may account for how very backward it was. Very dark ruby. Tight and one dimensional on nose and palate. But the sheer concentration of blackcurrent fruit is exhilarating. Big,long and tannic. Not at all "hedonistic" just now. I'll give it 90 points now, but it could become much more.

This had been decanted about 2 hours previously. Still very dark coloured. No discolouring at the edge. Very aromatic: black fruits, some leather, oak, some herbs. Luscious attacked, long finish but slightly dry on the mid-palate. I've had better examples, but even so 95ish.

1982 Pichon Lalande - the group was torn between this and the Lafite. I preferred this wine. Everything the Lafite had to offer, just a little more. I thought this was more resolved than the Lafite, but at this level, it's splitting hairs.

I picked this wine to go with my graduation dinner at the 5 Crowns in Newport on the recommendation of several of you on the board. Never having had a mature Bordeaux, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. The wine was decanted and I tasted a sip immediatly after, it tasted soft and supple with nice tannins, but hollow and lacking fruit. I chalked it up to not being open yet and let it sit for about an hour before coming back to it... Wow, the next time I tasted it it lived up to my expectations. A HUGE bouquet of red and black berries backed up with an expansive mouthful of fruit and enough acidity and sweet tannins to hold it all together. A beautiful wine that I would rate 97-98 points, and due to its dark color I would say it could go for several more years.

Cork very slightly moldy on top (a fine gray powder deposit). Cork in reasonably good shape. Seal intact. Opened with a small tasting glass to let the wine breath. Left to sit for 4 hours thereafter (had been standing from the cellar for 48 hours). Poured from the bottle (not decanted). Wine showing only a hint of age; bouquet is beautiful - lots of telltale black-current, hint of oak, and some toasty cedar, mineral and vegetal notes; great, long and silky finish (but less substantial than I remember); beautiful wine - near perfect. Fantastic and has many years to go (can it get better?).

Deep ruby red in color - not showing it's age. Great Bordeaux nose of cedar, underbrush, anise and spice. In the mouth the wine quite honestly did not live up to my expectations. It was clearly elegant but did not have the expansiveness or depth of fruit I would expect of such a legendary wine. It also seemed that the finish was clipped a bit. The wine is elegant and cleary of great breeding but it was not a 100 pointer on this night.
