1996 DRC Grands Echezeaux. With much excitement we (Whuzzup__ and I) pulled the cork on this bottle a few months back. There was a wine stain on the label and the capsule had evidence of seepage. Poured straight into Riedel Grand Cru Burgundy stems. I dropped my nose and took a deep whiff. I could not believe what I was smelling: fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies! This smell was just incredible. The nose evolved into baked bread and then buttered popcorn. At this point I’m hooked on DRC and I have not even had a sip. I felt like a teenager on his first date. On the palate the mouthfeel was so smooth - seamless. I’m sure there was plenty of structure in there but it was just so well put together it just slid down. Red fruit, spice (nutmeg) and just a touch of earthiness. This wine kept on changing. We would have a small pour, wait an hour, and do it again. Each time it was like a different wine. A hard thing to put into words. This was an epiphany wine for me. One of the best bottles I’ve ever had. In retrospect, I’m sure this wine was actually quite primary and has a long life ahead of it. Clearly the ‘96 vintage was a huge success for DRC. I guess I’ll just have to get a third job! Thanks Ben. Roberto. (Cross-Posted.)
