| I've never been one for very young Bdx and really did it just as an experiment to see what a top 4yr old would taste like. A very (positively) surprising experience. Decanted immediately prior to drinking. Colour was very purple, almost pink at the rim. Great cassis nose with overtones of raspberries. Expected a tannic monster, but the tannins were very soft. Even the wife enjoyed the sweetness. Obviously a well structured and medium bodied wine, I think this will (in 10 years?) prove to be a very good wine, easily rating a low-90s score. Not unpleasurable at all even today (after all the whole bottle had gone by the end of dinner). |

| This ‘98 Lefty is for real. Purchased at Sam’s during the recent “Blowout” for $29 at the strong recommendation of the staff. I figured it was not a bad price given the pedigree of this estate. After withdrawing the nice long Bordeaux cork I got a nice whiff of sweet dark fruit with a touch of spice. The nose was tight but with air opened. I decanted it for about an hour before I went to work. On the palate the wine just screams young Bordeaux. Initially the wine was a bit angular with some rough tannin on the finish. With time the sweet cassis came to the forefront and the tannins took a step back. After about 2 hours on decanter this wine had softened and was really nice. I kept going back for more. I just could not believe this was a ‘98 Lefty. The proof is in the bottle. I don’t think this was a baby-fat thing either. It is funny how these wines evolve. How can you go wrong with the prices of some of the New-World Cabs these days? Here you have one of the world’s great wines for less than $30. I say grab a few and don’t avoid the ‘98 Left Bankers. Cross-Posted. Roberto |
