1982 Beychevelle. This St. Julien has a wonderful nose of mixed fruit and flowers. In the mouth, the licorice mixed in with cassis is very strong. The wine has a lot more tannin than other 1982s we have drunk recently. It has also thrown a lot of sediment. The glasses toward the end were so cloudy that I ran them through filter paper. stefan 90-91. Lucie said she was too tired to rate the wine, but liked it a lot and felt that it was a perfect match for the quail.

Closed, muscular and tannic. Not flawed though, and could probably be appreciated better with a chunk of charred animal flesh.

[The] Beychevelle had a real nice nose of dark fruit, violet, stewed plum and cherry liquer. Yum. Light body and medium length with an exotic taste of peach. Much more intertesting bouquet than taste. I really enjoyed the nose though and it earned 92 pts. NOTE: [] are mine, ZP

1982 Beychevelle. Mature Color. Not much of a nose at first but with some swirling the classic aromas of Bordeaux emerge. Tobacco and leather. Decent fruit on the palate but a touch tarry and a bit of a tea-leaf quality suggest a mature wine.

As I have posted before, this wine is drinking wonderfully. To me this is fine, well-aged Bordeaux. Nice cedary nose, fine casis fruit and nice finish. Still not drying out.

The bottle was is good shape with a base neck fill. Cork intact and wet about half the way up. The color was dark and suggested a young wine. The nose also suggested youth: restrained, a bit musty but did yield fruit after some swirling. Initially in the mouth the wine was monolithic and a bit grapey with an noticable amount of tannin. This was in marked contrast to the typical elegance I expect from St. Juliens. A good comparison would be the '82 GPL which is also drinking like a wine younger than it's stated age. After an hour of airing the wine really opened up in terms of complexity and started to reveal many of the wonderful qualities of the cabernet grape. I noted hints of leather, pepper and asian spice. This was my third experience with this wine in the past year and this bottle was by far the most youthful. The previous two were ready to go and really impressed me. Hard to say if a few more years would improve the wine. I would give this bottle 93 points.
