A somewhat lighter Leoville Barton. For a young wine it's not as dark as one would expect and it's not as condensed in concentration as LB typicaly is. Flavors are consistent and good but it's probably a poor value at this point.

1997 Leoville Las Cases. Purchased at the recent Sam’s blowout. A young and primary nose of cassis with a touch of earthiness. It tastes young as well but is softer in the midele than expected with fresh black fruit as it crosses the palate. The finish was a bit hard and dry.

Found the 97 Leoville Barton for $19.99 at trader joe's. They seem to have *Lots* of marked down '97s, including Ducru for $29, Clinet and l'Angelus for $39. I know this isn't really a stellar year, but since Parker seemed to think this would be a good year for early drinking I thought I would give it a try. It tasted young, but not really all that closed, medium tannins, not to course, and an excellent fruit/acid balance. The aromas and flavors weren't all that complex but it was pleasant, and did even improve over a few hours in the glass. If this wine had been in the $10-15 range it would make an excellent everyday red. Certainly not what a second growth sets out to be, but nice all the same. I give it 87 points, but don't think it will improve more than a point or so.
