Dark color with sweet oak and anise on the nose. Hugely concentrated, full-bodied and somewhat Parkerized on the palate with lots of in-your-face fruit and low acidity. Fun to drink now but what will it be like in 5 years?

How terribly sad that the wonderful days of Grand Mayne in the $20 to $25 range are gone. If only I had stocked up more on the 1989 and 1990….drat! Anyway, this is darn good wine and the quality level of the wines in the tasting are taking another rather dramatic turn upward starting here. It starts with the aromatics that are taking on new levels of impression and complexity. There is excellent expression here, very inviting and complex with a new level of exotic spiciness…mostly the asian variety. In the mouth…wow, here we go again…there is a nearly ideal ripeness level here that gives the fruit just the right decadent sweetness. The aromatics first promise and the palate delivers a wonderful layered complexity to the fruit…the first time I recognize multiple layers in this tasting. A mouth filling, chewy wine that is quite broad and expansive across the mid-palate with a pleasingly long and lingering finish. Excellent Minus with upward potential. The best Grand Mayne I’ve ever had as it avoids the "hotness" earlier apparent in the 1989 and the "over the top" aspect of the 1990. I’ll be purchasing some of this eventually.
