Lately I've been pulling things from my cellar in an effort to see how they are coming along. Not a California guy at all, I have bought a few bottles of Montelena here and there over the years and I figured it would be fun to check in on the '95. The '97 I had recently was youthful and snappy. Dark red/black color. An interesting nose that at first was quite reduced and dominated by a yeasty/vulcanized rubber smell. With time this blew off to yield the expected Montelea boquet of dark fruits, spice and earth. The wine is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a finish that is just short of what I would expect. As the wine sits in the decanter it does put on weight but the finish is still clipped and devoid of tannin. This bottle, at least, seems to be ready to drink. |
