I've read mixed reviews of how this wine is currently showing recently so I thought I would pop a half bottle and take a look. I'm in the process of mining through my cellar pulling wines to sample. I'm trying to decide if If I like the way certain wines are developing. In some cases I'm not happy and in others, like this, I am. Dark purple and grapey in color. The nose was shy at first but after an hour in the glass it opened nicely and showed aromatics of Cassis, moist earth, lead pencil and pine resin. The palate texture was creamy and full-bodied with a dense midsection full of sweet, ripe Cabernet fruit. The finish was long and moderately tannic but not drying. The overall impression was one of balance and class - clearly of First Growth quality. This wine is surprisingly more open than many of its '95 Left Bank counterparts and while still primary was a joy to drink at this stage. It will only get better. |

My palate was getting burned by this point, and I haddabbled in a few dessert wines, so I don't think this got a fair shake. I found the 95 LLClean, restrained and closed up. It reminded me of the 95 Ducru in some ways: a wine witha big reputation from the same terroir but impenetrable at this point. 90 pts.

Plum color with purple/red rim. The nose was closed and tight. There was red fruit (red fruit acidity, similar to unripe fruit), spice (nutmeg), vanilla/oak developed after an hour and half. Very faint cedar and tobacco. This was not giving away its secrets. There was lots of fruit in the taste, raspberry/strawberry. The tannins were extremely well balanced between the fruit tannins and oak tannins. The tannins were strong almost overwhelming, but well balanced. Some acidity, but not overbearing. Full bodied, long finish which starts very aggressive and dry and then settles and becomes smooth and silky, even almost milky. This is a monster, which will not give away its secrets easily. This will take another 10 to 15 years before being approachable. Should last another 10+ years after that. I think this is just starting to enter into its dumb stage. I would rate this 95+. I was actually disappointed, but because this wasn’t showing well. The components are there, give this time.

This wine is PROFOUND. It was a hit. We drank it while opening presents and eating chocolate cake. So noticeably younger than the others, of course, but a staggering nose offers the first hint of how complex, layered, and profound this wine truly is. A little difficult to fully assess, other than to say, as Justice White said about pornography, you know it when you see it (with the possible exception of the '93 Balthus label?). It is difficult to describe the '95 LLC's greatness at this time, but you know it because you can see, smell and taste it. Beautiful purple color. This wine rates 93+ points right now but will be a 95+ wine in 5-10 years.

The LLC was very young, very very inky dark and probably kinda upset that we were drinking him this young. It had a dusting of toasty oak but it wasn't overdone. The oak probably dominates a little more now than it will, especially right after we opened it. The nose was very complex as was the palate. I would have to say that I am very happy to own a case of this. I would let it sit a few more years if you can (I think I have enough stuff to keep me happy until then). I am going to be very unoriginal and copy the RP and WS score exactly...95. It was awesome.
