| The 1996 Les Forts de Latour seemed to be overridden by the less attractive part of the 1996 vintage: sharp tannins. The 1996 Medocs in general are tannic, but they are balanced by brilliantly ripe fruit. The '96 Les Forts was tannic but the fruit seemed a touch astringent, almost un-ripe. The 1995 Les Forts I had last month was much more enjoyable, with luscious, mouth-filling, forward fruit. The '96 was unexciting. Not a bad bottle of wine, mind you, but not the thrill I get generally from a '96 Medoc. |

| Decanting for one hour, ... Wow! The nose is just incredible. I am siting now three ft away working on my CAD and that amazing nose just simply make my tongue wet! I have to take sip after sip... Deep purple and almost opaque, this wine is thick and intense everywhere. RP rated it a 93-94 for the 96 vintage, and I remembered him saying that this wine is remarkably tannic. I detected a hint of tannins, but the fruit is overpowering in every sense (this is a half bottle, so it may have developed faster...). The finish is long too. Compared to the Leoville Barton 96, which has almost no hint of a lasting and substantial finish, this wine surpassed the Barton in this aspect. Although a second wine of Latour, it seems that this wine IMHO is a really good one, esp in the nose and finish. I believe that the mid palate quality will develop with slight aging. At 1/5 the cost of a Latour, a good buy. I am lucky to have the 95 and 96. |
