Went down to the N.H. Liquor Store to check out what they have in stock from 2002 and picked up a bottle of this at $32. The only other 2002 I've had to date was Pichon Baron and I thought it was solid but a bit unexciting. This 2002 Leoville Poyferre hit the spot. It was a bit closed on the nose, but it had real nice structured tannins that were smooth and satisfying. This was a quite different style than some of the Bordeaux produced in the past four or five vintages. I'm happy to have lots of the rich and sweet 2000 vintage in my cellar, but, as SF Ed and others here have pointed out, Bordeaux vintages like 1988 and 1996 offer up that classic restraint and structure that a lot of us look for in Bordeaux. This 2002 Leoville Poyferre offered just that. This was a delicious young wine, exhibiting a deep purple color and classic St. Julien black fruit on the palate. This is "real" Bordeaux. I'm going to race SteveH and EricP back to the N.H. Liquor store to buy a case. I also bought a bottle of d'Armaillac for $22, thought I'd give that a try this week, hard to beat the price. They also have Duhart at $27. I bought a Lafite for $120 because I havent heard back from Garnet yet on my purchase of some at $109, have you heard from them Hound? In any event, I give the 2002 Leoville Poyferre a solid 91 points and I'm happy to taste my first 2002 Bordeaux that matches the descriptions I've heard about the vintage that it is a structured, tannic, 1988-styled SF-Ed-type-of-vintage.... Rating: 91 points.
