I'm really reassessing these 1995s. Was James Suckling right? Well, no.... 1996-- certainly in the Medoc-- was much better than 1995. But these 1995s are coming into form. They are opening up a bit, shedding the iron tannins. This wine, while tannic, surprised me a bit in accessibility. The nose was very impressive, cedar and black currant. When you taste these Leoville Bartons of the 1990s-- starting, say, with the '94, '95, '96-- you really see the improvement in wine-making from the 1980s. The 1995 Leoville Barton is a very pure wine with another twenty years ahead of it. A nice tannic wine with the fruit to stand up to the tannins-- It doesn't leave you wondering on that issue like you do with the 1994 Leoville Barton. This will get even better.

95 Leoville Barton [St Julien] I was disappointed by the austere showing this made. To me the 96 was much better. There are some cordite/gunpowder aromas here but I prefer those on the trap/skeet fields rather than the dinner table. Maybe we just drank the far too young. 88 pts.

Château Leoville Barton 1995 - Nice purple colour. Fruity (blackcurrant, fig), spicy, floral, complex nose. Lots of fruit balanced with tannins, a bit earthy in mouth but a pretty long finish. A very nice wine, not quite as powerful as the Barton 1996 - 89 / 100.

The '95 Leoville Barton was just another steady performance from this estate. Typical Leoville Barton, typical '95, more forward than its '96 counterpart. Typical 90 point rating.

Had the 1995 Leoville Barton this past weekend, didn't have a decanter; day one, tough as nails. Day two, opened up into a lovely wine, with good cherry fruit and soft earthy tannins, but still too young for drinking. Rated 91+
